Delores Lee Barringer Dunham was born on April 29, 1944, the second child of Anna Grier Barringer and the late Curlee Barringer. She transitioned peacefully from her earthly life into eternity on May 31, 2013 at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, NC after a lengthy illness.
She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 32 years, John Dunham; mother, Mrs. Anna Grier Barringer of Huntersville, NC; brothers, Jerome Barringer of Huntersville, NC, James Barrringer (Barbara) of Lithonia, GA, Clement Barringer (Kim) of Clarkston, MI; sisters, Gloria Elliott of Amityville, NY, Madlyn Phelan of Greenfield Park, NY and Debbie Wade of Charlotte, NC; one step-son, Reginald Dunham of Charlotte, NC, nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Delores was born in Huntersville, NC and graduated from Torrence-Lytle High School in 1962. Delores attended Mecklenburg College, Central Piedmont Community College and went on to graduate from the Surgical Technology Program at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, NC.
She had a committed and generous spirit and always went the extra mile to make sure she did her part to serve her family, her church, her sorority, her patients and any other persons whose lives she touched.
She generously helped to provide for her family after the sudden death of her father in 1967, assuming a parental role in helping to care for her younger siblings. She was deeply loved by her immediate family as well as her extended family. She participated in many of the annual Grier Family Reunions and was instrumental in much of the coordination of reunions in Charlotte as well as New Jersey, Atlanta and Ohio.
As a lifelong member of the Catawba Presbyterian Church, she served faithfully in many capacities including Clerk of Session, Ruling Elder, Moderator of the Presbyterian Women, Adult Choir President and member of the Deacon and Trustee Boards until her failing health prevented her from serving.
At Presbyterian Hospital, Delores was a nationally certified Surgical Technologist for 45 years where she specialized in neurological and orthepedic surgeries as well as served as instructor in all areas of surgical technology. She loved her work, was grateful for the impact she had on people's lives, was highly regarded as a invaluable member of the "Presby" Operationg Room Staff and adored by those with whom she worked and instructed.
With the encouragement of a good friend, Delores pledged and became a member of the Alpha Pi Chi Sorority, a nationally recognized service organization with an emphasis on education and community outreach. Delores served the sorority as 1st, 2nd and 3rd Vice President, Secretary and Rush Captain.
Our hearts are heavy as we attempt to make sense of a world without our beloved Delores. Her passing has left a void in our lives that will never be filled. We are however comforted by the Holy Spirit and the outpouring of love from family, friends, neighbors and co-workers who knew and loved her.
The family of Delores Lee Barringer Dunham extends their sincere appreciation for the kindness and generosity expressed during Delores's illness and passing. Your care and concern have been a blessing to us and served to strengthen us for our sometimes difficult journey with our beloved Delores. We mourn the loss of our beloved daughter, wife, sister, auntie, and cousin but celebrate her gain--eternity with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
May God continue to bless you and give you light for your journey.
